Fertiliser price fall for WA growers as Elders announces second urea shipment

The price of fertiliser available to Western Australian grain growers has decreased further with Elders’ announcement of a second shipment of urea.

With a second shipment in transit, Elders is now offering fertiliser at $599 per tonne, excluding GST.

Urea prices dropped to $650/tonne when Elders’ first shipment recently arrived in WA.

Elders Rural Services Managing Director Mike Guerin said the discounted price of $599/tonne would also apply to those orders placed with the company following the announcement of the first shipment. A full refund for the difference will be provided to growers who have already paid for their orders, ensuring they are not disadvantaged.

“We have secured a better deal for the product, and we are passing these savings onto our customers. The price reduction will further ease production costs for growers and is a tangible mark of thanks for their support,” Mr Guerin said

Mr Guerin said Elders was able to offer growers a further price reduction due to a combination of factors, including increased volume of supplies, a downward movement in global urea prices and favourable trading conditions.

“Elders is committed to striking a better deal for primary producers and to driving efficiencies in the supply chain. Our unique global supply chain strength means the benefits are seen at the farm gate.”

To assist growers even further, the company has secured long-term storage and despatch facilities through to July 30.

“That means growers can place their orders now and not have to pay or organise delivery until the end of July. It provides growers with peace of mind in knowing that their supplies and price of fertiliser are secure, without having to worry about payment or delivery until that fertiliser is needed.”

Mr Guerin said Elders had conducted the initial shipment of fertiliser to assess the opportunity to increase supply choice for WA growers.

“We believe that the addition of new players to the fertiliser market can only be a positive move, generating increased competition and supply options for the benefit of Western Australia’s primary producers,” he said.

“We saw the wholesale market respond to the initial shipment with the lowering of urea prices in WA, saving the average grower many thousands of dollars in their fertiliser purchases. This second shipment and associated price reduction will no doubt benefit growers even further.”

The two shipments of urea have been organised by Elders in co-operation with the company’s joint venture partner in grain, Toepfer International.
